The chess.com Speed Chess took place Thu 10th Nov to Sun 18th Dec 2022. Starting with two qualifying events in mid November the knockout phase of 16 players started 23rd November. Players such as Fabiano Caruana, Wesley So, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Levon Aronian, Nihal, Sarin and Anish Giri played, Nihal Sarin reached the semifinals. In the end the favourites and only previous winners of the event, Magnus Carlsen (2016-17 where he defeated Nakamura both times, in addition in 2020 Carlsen lost to MVL in the semifinals) and Hikaru Nakamura (2018-21), contested the final. Nakamura won his fifth title by beating Carlsen 14.5-13.5 in the final. The win was set up by a +4 =5 -0 start in the 5 minute section after which Carlsen was always playing catchup, although Carlsen closed the gap and after three wins in a row in the bullet it looked like he might do it, Nakamura held on in the end.
